Can someone confirm if the following manufacturers markings are correct for a 66 Hertz Magnum 500: 14x6 JK UNISTYLE 795C C1 Made in The United States Want to be sure before I send them out for restoration! thx Lee
ALl mine have tires mounted on them at this time but I do have a picture of that area that was provided by another and it matches what you posted except the very last You list C1 they show a large C with a 6 inside Hope this helps
Hertz Wheel Markings - pictures Jeff, Yes, the 1 is inside the C. It appears to be a date code or inspection stamp as all the rims have different vaules all stamped with a big letter that has a small number within the boundry of the letter. I also have 2 different stampings. See attached pictures. thanks, Lee
Thanks for the additional pictures... as I mentioned before it does appear that they are what you want. Good luck with the plating and remounting.... let us know how it goes
I thought I would add some input . The rim is the unique part of the Hertz wheel. The center is available from any number of wheels or even reproduction. When you mentioned restoration a thought came to mind I have heard horror stories of the restoration company providing a new and improved dot approved wheel outer rim and welding the old center into the new wheel rim. That ruins the Hertz wheel. For proper chrome plating you have to seperate the rim from the center.Who ever you use should be aware of the unique nature and shape of the rim and also the exact offset of the center as that is critical in proper clearance for front disc brakes. I think if the use of a lathe to separate the wheel rim from the center is used ether the rim or the center has to be sacrificed. Just make sure it is the center that is sacrificed to save the rim. There is a Hertz like wheel that is used on Mopers that has a different offset then the correct Hertz wheel .It has the look but the offset is different. It will fit on the back of a Shelby but will not clear the front disc's without a 1/4 inch spacer. When that one is cut a part to try to restore to correct Hertz wheel offset ,it can't be used effectively because when you move the center to the right offset the original weld line is visible even with polishing and chroming.
Bob... Great points. As for the center, aren't the centers for Mopar's also formed for smaller diameter lugnuts? For others pictures of the rim were posted on an earlier thread
Jeff ,I am not sure . I got rid of the last set of the Mopar wheels (forgot to mention that some mopars apparently have the same as Ford bolt pattern) I had 6 months ago so I don't have a way to check now. They bolted up fine on a Hertz car that a friend bought them for ( couldn't find right wheels and wanted something that looked close) and the lugnuts tightened down as needed. The fronts had to have spacers as I mentioned . I don't remember anything about a clearance issue with the lugnut studs unless some previous owner had already drilled them out.
You really don't notice the difference since it is slight. From my recall the Ford lug nuts just do not sit as deep in the holes as they do with the Ford wheels. Of course if the wheels get damaged a bit the holes can be forced out from using the larger lug nuts and allot of impact wrench... of course you have to be watchful of cracks.
Bob, Why do the centers have to be cut out in the first place (short of being cracked or otherwise not useable)? I was planning on using Craig Conley at Paradise Wheels in California, but I will certainly discuss this with him before I do anything. Does anyone have any other recommendations for people who can do it right? thx lee
