I own at this time 1967 fastback and a 1969 convertible, hoping to purchase a Shelby in the future.

I am looking at purchasing a 69 Shelby that kissed a tree in 1975, the car has been in storage ever since. The car is Jade Green with an automatic and A/C. The block and transmission housing are cracked and can not be repaired. If I replace them with equal components non number matching how much will this reduce the value of the car? At this time I believe the car is worth around $70 if put it back to original condition. Bottom line the car would not be number matching when done.

Any help on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

    Rick

Well Rick it is all gonna start out with a number. That number is ,what are you going to pay for this wreck?

Well, that is what i'm trying to figure out. I was thinking around $15k, taking in consideration it would most likely take another $20 TO $30K to put it back to the original state plus my labor. Even then it would put the end figure around $60K making my best guess.

$70k ? Where does that number come from? 15K ? You can buy a real Shelby for $15k? If so, you shouldn't be debating it at all. I have watched 68-69 prices for 25 years and and have only seen a dozen cars in that price range. Is this a convertible? a fastback? Is it a GT350 or a GT500?
Because you can probably buy a complete, running driving GT350 for $70k.

I think your numbers are a little askew to start with.....

Non matching numbers is only an issue if you are selling the car to someone that cares about that sort of thing.

The most it would effect the value is probably 20 %.

Tell us about the car and we can give you a better ide of the value. Have any pictures? The Shelby number?

That is what the Newbie said in his post. Personally, I don't think you are going to find one under $50k, wrecked or not.

Ok here we go, It is a 69 Shelby GT500 fastback that is Jade Green with an automatic transmission and A/C. The car was wreaked in 1975 when it hit a tree in the left front. This drove the frame rail back buckling the floor pan under the drivers seat. It must of spun around and hit something else with the right rear quarter because its pushed in about 6". It was stored outside up north without an air cleaner so water is in the motor. I don't know what damage there is to the block. The transmission bell housing is cracked so that will have to be replaced with a new housing. The car remained in storage in Florida until now.

If this Shelby would be worth $60K plus after restoration and not be number matching then i could make a little on the turn around or just keep it and drive it.

    I appreciate the help
    Rick

You have said two different things about this car. First, the block is cracked and cannot be repaired,,,then there is water in the block and you do not know what shape it is in or if it can be repaired. I know 1000 people that will buy that car for 15k matching numbers or not, wrecked or not. You want help,,give us a VIN number and we can start to tell you how it is supposed to be put back together as close as can be to factory.:cigar:

Most Shelbys even wrecked ones, can't be had for less than $40k. You haven't told us where the numbers you are throwing out are coming from....help us... help you. If you can buy a Shelby for under $40k, you should have done it yesterday, regardless of the condition.

The final value will be determined on how well the car is documented and the quality of the work that has been performed.

The numbers come from backing off the 60K mark(approx value). I am expecting to spend around 25K just in parts to restore the car and i am hoping he will take 15K for the car. So that puts me at 40K invested with no labor. I had another gentlemen here in florida tell me that the car is nothing special being it is an automatic with air and it was sold in NJ. I will get the numbers and send them to ya later tonight.

The block is the unknown. I don't know if it needs sleeves or if the water jackets have cracks. Until i get the car i will not know, just preparing for the worst.

Well, let's turn that around, if you could buy a restored GT500, auto trans for $60k, that would be a steal. I would expect that car to price out around $80,000.

As I said before it fully depends on the quality of the work, the details, the history of the car.

and stop listening to the guys that are giving you bad information.

In 25 years of following these cars, I have seen maybe a dozen cars under $25,000. Most were burned beyond recognition.

www.cobrajet.org ,,,,,,should give you some clues on where to look on the block for numbers. The hood and front fenders should be fiberglass. A tilt steering wheel was an option that year. Push the turn signal lever forward to check that out. A 69 with air is a premium car. Good luck:thumbup:
