What kind of motor was originaly in the 1967 shelby GT500. Also where could I find that motor core so i can rebuild it from the ground up? Thanks for your help.
Re: I Need some help with my search. Depends on how correct you want the finished product to be. If you want it as close as possible to the original engine you need to start with a 428 block (can be found in large Ford products from the same year) with a casting date prior to the car's assembly date at Ford. From there its collecting parts from a number of different engines (FE engines were often assemblied using the mix and match method at Ford You'll need a shopping list with all the engineering numbers for all the parts then start looking. But you could always get lucky and find a complete, matching numbers, PI engine with a standard bore. But not likely
Re: I Need some help with my search. The 67 Shelby GT500 428 engine was a police intercepter block which had extra webbing in the main cap area like the later cobrajet block for added durability under harsh conditions. The standard 428 block looks the same on the outside and so does a 390.It have a C6ME for a early car or C7ME for a later car. The heads were the same as the 390 GT engine. The PI engine came with a 67 style 427 harmonic balancer which required a special shaped timing pointer designed to work with the larger diameter balancer. The intake was a medium riser duel 4 set up with a C7ZX engineering number. The C7ZX prefix meant a Shelby part. The two carbs were a C3AF9510 BJ and C3AF9510 BK they were also used on 427 medium riser engines also. The dist was a 427 duel point mechanical advance with a C5AF engineering number. The exhaust manifolds were 390 GT units.I hope this helps.
