When pricing an 08 Shelby GT is the $1,000 gaz guzzler tax included in the MSRP/Invoice price or is it added TO the MSRP/Invoice price? A dealer said it was in addition, but this article suggests it's part of the veh price: About 2300 Shelby GT coupes and convertibles will be built for 2008 (with most of those likely being convertibles). The cars go on sale in August through Shelby-authorized Ford dealers, priced at $9,500 more than the base Mustang GT for the coupe, $11,800 for the convertible (prices include $1,000 gas-guzzler tax).
Now I'm 2 for 2; 2 dealers said the gas guzzler tax is included in th MSRP, 2 say it's an add on cost. Then another dealer said it's part of the MSRP but not part of the invoice. Yet another said, "Hmm, I never thought about it - I don't know. If it's part of the MSRP then it shouldn't be another add on one would think. I just don't want to pay another grand if I already did in the original cost of the car to the dealer.
The Gas Guzzler Tax IS included with the MSRP...... visit any New American Car Dealership and look at the Window Sticker. The Tax is listed ON the Window Sticker, not the secondary list that the Dealer Puts on after they get the Car. David.
Just found a Photo of a Shelby Window Sticker......... If you look closely, you will see it listed (by the Factory). It is the First item listed under "Optional Equipment" for just $1,300.00. Double click on the Photo the once it enlarges, click on it again to make it even bigger.
Not to beat a dead horse (aka gas guzzler tax), but ... David, armed with your window sticker photo I gave myself a crash course in The Energy Act of 1978 establishing the gas guzzler tax. It's not something I'd suggest anyone do, especially on a beautiful Minnesota fall evening, but as you can tell from my screen name I kinda dig the law ... but am proud to say I didn't know anything about this one (rich lawyers have nice enough cars they know about the guzzler tax, teachers don't, simple as that But you've got it right, it's no option - it's a mandatory tax that has to be paid so it only makes sense it's built into the MSRP so I shouldn't be paying it like it's an optional expense. Thx! Oh, and if you lead such a boring life, apparantly like I do, here it is in all it's glory: Section 4064. Gas guzzler tax (a) Imposition of tax There is hereby imposed on the sale by the manufacturer of each automobile a tax determined in accordance with the following table: (I'll have mercy on you and not include the actual table).
Okay I concede, The MSRP I was thinking of is the "original" MSRP on the Mustang GT since the mileage numbers on the factory car don't warranty a surcharge. Yes once the car leaves Vegas it now falls into the catagory of having a gas guzzler tax. My dealer showed the original sticker with the MSRP of $30,790.00, the Shelby sticker with no pricing other than the "$1000.00 Gas Guzzler". Then the dealer added sticker showing the MSRP of $30,790.00, $7390.00 for the Conversion, the $1000.00 Guzzler tax and the market adjustment. Thats what threw me off I apologize.
Doug, thanks for the follow up. I think it's a big of a "shell game," requiring someone to pay it, so where/how it gets included or added may be different, just as long as one doesn't get stuck paying it twice. Good info, thanks!
Paying it twice is what I'm afraid of now.....was the surcharge included in the $7390.00 conversion price?!?!?!? Like stated in my previous post this number only showed up on the dealer applied sticker. I must check into this now. Keep on keepin' on.
Apparently, the Tax is put on Cars with certian MPG Ratings or HP Ratings. Since Shelby Automobiles installed the Shelby Package, the Tax would not be included in the Shelby Package Price. I am pretty sure that Shelby would not want the extra paper work that comes with collecting and reporting that Tax and I do not (reads "HOPE not") think that a Ford Dealer would be Stupid enough to charge it again. David.
Check a stock Mustang GT window sticker for the gas guzzler tax. If the tax applies to the stock GT, it will be in the factory sticker. I would be surprised if the Shelby Vegas modifications would 'qualify' the car for the tax. The sticker displayed earlier in this post is of a GT500 which most definitely qualifies for the tax.
I just checked the new 2007 & 2008 Mustangs on Ebay and here is what I found. The V6 & GT Mustang and the GT/CS Mustangs do NOT list a Gas Guzzler Tax on the Window Sticker. The Mustangs that become Shelby GT's do NOT list the Tax on the Ford Window Sticker, BUT..... a Gas Guzzler Tax of $1,000.00 IS listed on the Shelby Automobiles Window Sticker AS part of the MSRP. The Saleen Mustang Window Stickers state that "The MSRP Price does NOT include the $1,000.00 Gas Guzzler Tax" (I thought that was odd) and the Roush Mustangs do not mention the Tax at all. David.
When Shelby adds the Ford Racing parts, the car falls into Gas Guzzler territory. The MPG falls by 2 (on a manual transmission) which results in a $1000 penalty or tax. The calculation leaves me a little confused for the automatic transmission cars. There is no reduction in the MPG rating but they also are charged the tax. robin
I am not sure what kind of formula the Government uses to decide which vehicle gets the Tax, maybe it is HP or Emissions. Since Shelby works directly with Ford and Sallen is now a Manufacturer they most likely fall under the Law of having to deal with the Tax and since Roush & Steeda are just Modifiers, like many others, they dont have to deal with it. David.
I just Googled "Gas Guzzler Tax" and this is what I found: What is the Gas Guzzler Tax? The Energy Tax Act of 1978 established a Gas Guzzler Tax on the sale of new model year vehicles whose fuel economy fails to meet certain statutory levels. The gas guzzler tax applies only to cars (not trucks) and is collected by the IRS. The fuel economy figures used to determine the Gas Guzzler Tax are different from the fuel economy values provided on this web site and in the Fuel Economy Guide. The tax does not depend on your actual on-the-road mpg, which may be more or less than the EPA published value. The purpose of the Gas Guzzler Tax is to discourage the production and purchase of fuel inefficient vehicles. The amount of any applicable Gas Guzzler Tax paid by the manufacturer will be disclosed on the automobile's fuel economy label (the window sticker on new cars). GAS GUZZLER TAX Unadjusted MPG (combined)* Tax at least 22.5 No tax at least 21.5, but less than 22.5 $1000 at least 20.5, but less than 21.5 $1300 at least 19.5, but less than 20.5 $1700 at least 18.5, but less than 19.5 $2100 at least 17.5, but less than 18.5 $2600 at least 16.5, but less than 17.5 $3000 at least 15.5, but less than 16.5 $3700 at least 14.5, but less than 15.5 $4500 at least 13.5, but less than 14.5 $5400 at least 12.5, but less than 13.5 $6400 less than 12.5 $7700 * The combined fuel economy MPG value (55% city, 45% highway) is used to determine tax liability. The MPG value is also adjusted slightly to account for differences in test procedures made since the base year, but it is not adjusted for in-use short fall. The unadjusted combined MPG of a vehicle can be approximated from the city and highway values provided in the Fuel Economy Guide and on this website by the following equation: (1/(.495/City MPG + .351/Highway MPG)) + .15 Since this is an approximate calculation, the actual gas guzzler tax may be off by one tax bracket.
I emailed Shelby autos and received an answer as to whether Shelby adds the Guzzler surcharge and they do not. It is added by the dealer after the conversion price. So it looks like I didn't pay it twice.
Does your "Shelby" Window Sticker look like this. Notice this one lists the Tax on it. Just double click on the Pic.
Yes it looks like that..... but if you notice the conversion price is not shown on that paper. So if it were included in the conversion (which it's not) you wouldn't know by looking at that window sticker. You would have to trust the dealer, ugh..cough, cough, I can't believe I said that.
