I wanted to share a scan of a Ken Miles check i picked up from Ebay some time ago. It along with 2 other much older SA checks where glued onto backing. It took an hour of careful steaming to get this one free. The other two, 1 to Lucas electric and to Aeroquip are still entombed. Most of the Miles checks I have seen have been much earlier, given that he raced and won Sebring & Daytona prior to this check and LeMans soon after, could this be his winnings from either of the two earlier races? Any information on this would be helpful.
You can check on the internet for the 1966 calendar, I have the 1964 and 1965 calendars, it may be tough to tell. The closet race was Sebring 1966 which was March 26,1966 when Miles and Ruby came in first with the Mk.II roadster. Miles was instrumental in development testing at Shelby American,so it hard to say how that worked out, perhaps they were paid extra for finishing 1,2, or3rd? Usually it was a flat fee like $500.00, but then you have to take taxes out,. so it would be an odd amount, not a round number. It would be interesting to see how often they wrote checks to the employees, usually it is on a Friday, every two weeks, with checks to suppliers done sporatically, but Shelby American may have been done differently. The dollar amount here to Miles was most than I have seen before, but Sebring was a big race. Even if this was Miles' paycheck for two weeks, that was alot of money in 1966. We may never know unless SAAC has the check registry book and there is a memo for this check. These checks are important for several historical reasons, I had hoped they were at least recorded before they were distributed around the U.S., but I doubt this was done.
Oddly enough I remember seeing another April 66 check, this one was sitting on the seat of the Cobra Caravan R-Model at SAAC-30. Even have a photo! As you can see this check was issued only 4 days after my check, giving Ken a total of $2680! If I'm not mistaken this car and check belong to Corey Lawson. Thanks for looking.
