As far as I know, leaf springs were not changed. What Ford installed on the Hi-Po Mustangs is what they used. There is a lot of speculation and mis-information on what was and wasn't installed at the San Jose plant and what was done at Shelby.

I have a book at home listing what was installed on a factory HiPo Mustang. I remember something about leaf springs on HiPo cars. I will look it up tonight. It was quite a few years ago when I rebuilt my springs, but as I remember it, they had more than 4 leafs. I will let you know later.
    Thanks
    Bill
