OK, all you gear heads and rumble bottoms. Today on SPEED is the Gumball Rallye. It is the most accurate representation of the Cannonball Baker Sea to Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash (an actual clandestine event in the 70's) The movie Cannonball was a spoof, entertainment, loosly based on fact. Gumball Rallye is worth watching just to hear the 427 Cobra and Ferrari go at it gear for gear throughout the movie. Wait till you see the opening sequence at O dawn AM in NYC. It will give you chills if you are truely a Ford fan. It was on last weekend and again today. Watch for the Lost Drive Inn on SPEED. SEE Y'ALL Happy New Year
I agree with Lee - one of the all-time great car movies that you "must see". If you have surround sound, sit in the middle of the room and crank it for the NYC exit in the beginning. It is actually not a bad movie on top of the car stuff... Raul Julia is great, Gary Busey is playing himself I think (LOL), and the "off-road" scene with the Cobra and Daytona is priceless. Ahh, to have cheap Cobras and Ferraris again! After you watch the movie, go get Brock Yate's book, "Cannonball". There is a great chapter about Kopec and his entry in the Cannonball with the 65 GT-350. Does anybody remember what the chassis number was for the 427? I used to have it, but am too lazy to look. Happy New Year to all. SEE Y'ALL Happy New Year On just before it (4:30PM EST) is "A Man and a Woman" which is a typical French movie that guys just don't understand, but the male lead is a race car driver and there are good historical shots of a GT40 MkI, a GT350R, a Monte Carlo Rallye Mustang coupe, etc, etc. some great shots from LeMans, etc. To me it is not nearly as enjoyable to watch as Gumball Rallye, but it does have lots of Shelby American history in it.
