my wife has a 1973 Mercury Comet with a straight six two hundred with 74.000 orig miles. My wife was 16 when she purchased the car from her grandparents.her grandparents gave her the car & let her make payments as she was doinig so about 45days later both grandparents were killed in a car accident.when her mom&dad took care of their belonging's they found an envlope with my wife's name on it.the envlope had her car payments in the envlope they were going to give her money back to her once she paid for the car.but they had the accident before they were able to.once they were gone she had the Comet redone .she started driving the car for her everyday car.after she started driving the Comet someone hit the passenger side door with their door and took a chunk of paint out of the door.so that scared her & she parked the Comet.and bought another car & started driving it so she could protect her Comet because it's the only thing she has to remember her grandparents by.but she was only 19yrs old when she parked the car she didn't know that you can't park a car in grass.she thought she was protecting the car.when she parked the car in the grass it rusted out the torque boxes & front toe boards.I have a friend who restores cars & he said it could be fixed.but he doesn't have time to do the work for us.and they don't make torque box replacements for a Comet so i was wondering if ones from a mustang would work.If so what year would work.the car has a really good body&engine.my wife is 37yrs old now& she just found out in january that she has had chronic pancretitis for the last 8yrs & there's no cure.so I love to see her enjoy her car again.so i'm looking for some help&advice I would even be willing to help do the repair if I could get someone to teach me how.I love cars I just don't know as much as I would like to.THANKS BRIAN
Welcome to the site. Wow - what a story. I am not sure of repair details but you will end up having more into the car than it will ever be worth. I know there is a sentimental factor that is hard to put a price on. I would think Mustang parts could work. However, the Maverick/Comet was fairly popular. You should be able to find a solid donor car somewhere in this big country of ours. Good Luck! robin
Most have hand made replacement torque boxes for these cars. As for floor plans it seems 71-73 Mustang pan will work with some trimming and massaging. Auto Krafters said they were going to make Maverick floor pans soon, even going so far as to give out part numbers. I don't think they have them yet. Good luck.
