Good Morning All. My starter seems quite noisy on my 66GT350. I replaced the starter thinking it might be going bad, and even put on a starter for an automatic, because it seemed to fit into the bellhousing shield better. Still noisy. Anyone have this problem? Should I add a shim to the starter. Has anyone had to shim their starter? My car is a stick shift. Thanks

    Hi Tommy,
As far as I know the starters are different between a stick
shift and automatic. Consequently, you should never mix.
Make sure that you get the correct starter and check the
teeth all around on the flywheel ring at the same time.

    Tommy,

In addition to what Texas Swede says; do a visual of the flywheel/ring-gear face for any misalignment. Shimming will only correct a problem of a change in depth of the starter nose. This can happen if you change the blockplate behind the bellhousing, but if nothing has been changed, shimming probably won't help.

You didn't descibe the noise, but is it possible that the bushings on the starter are worn - do you have any "slop" or play you can detect when the unit is out of the car?

Probably the simplest test would be to test the starter with a battery while you have it outside the vehicle. Is the noise in the starter, or only after the unit is installed?

    Good Luck.
