I was talking to a Shelby type about an Econoline van he has. It has over 200,000 miles and has never had the oil changed. That got your attention, mine too. He said on the first change they put Mobil 1 in the engine. Ever since, at 3,000 mile intervals, they have changed the filter and added a quart of Mobile 1. He got this from a Ford Tech years ago. The van uses no oil and runs great. I have since checked out the theory with several other folks who have heard the same thing. How about some feedback out there in Shelby Land?
Ah yes, the stuff of legends. The story is probably true, but the question one would have to ask the "Shelby type" is, does he do that with his Shelby? I bet not! Reminds me of the days in the '60's when there were many "gas saver" gimmicks one could put on one's car and save a fortune in gas. The story is told of a man who owned a Volkswagen, put one on and had to keep bailing out his gas tank because it kept overflowing. That said, it is absolutely amazing the abuse some engines can take and survive. But as a general rule, it is prudent to change the oil regularly, regardless of the brand.
