Something I do on restorations is paint the new gas tank with automotive clearcoat. Wipe it down with cleaner/ prep. Don't sand or scuff it. Shoot it with the same clearcoat you use with a two part paint system and it will maintain it's new look till the inside rots out. You might want to carry it to a body shop if you are not set up to paint. I always replace the sending unit when I put in a new tank, especially if it lt looks brown and fuzzy.
