    That's a good question, I'd have to look to be sure but since the shift linkage and the kick down linkage is on the drivers side of the transmission I assume small side of the transmission cross member goes to the drivers side. I think the whole point of that bracket is just to provide extra clearance to the linkage side or otherwise Ford just would have used the manual transmission bracket for the AT and the MT.
