An optional .80 ratio is available, which would be much more reasonable--the gap from 4th to 5th would be similar to the gap from 3rd to 4th. Mike
I have a T5Z in both my 65 #144 and my 66 Paxton car #1636. The T5Z is an upgraded T5 , carbon fiber synchros, etc... and the torque rating is better. They shift really nice once broken in properly. I got mine from Modern Driveline in California, I think they were around $1300 for the trans only. I think the standard 5th gear is .64. I put the optional .83 in both. With a 3.50 rear and stock size tires that are roughly 26" overall, it is a good combo. I think the math worked out to a final drive of 3.07:1 in fifth gear. #144 ran the Copperstate 1000 this year, and Alain DeCadenet (Victory by Design) and I co-drove one day, about 300 miles, with a stretch of road where we did not go below 130 MPH for a full tank of fuel! The car was very relaxed at that speed in 5th, I recall it was around 4-4500 rpm, or whatever is straight up on a 65 tach. And even though the speedo gear is changed to supposedly be accurate, it was still way off ! We replied on GPS to check speed and mileage. Best speed we saw was 146 MPH, and I started to be very concerned about the speed rating of my tires being exceeded, and backed off! The one problem I have had with all of the cars that I have converted is the clutch pedal sticking to the floor on really high rpm shifts. I think it has to do with using a diaphram clutch rather than a Long style. Have added return springs, pedal stops, and properly adjusted - think it is just a result of the old bellcrank style linkage on a modern Centerforce clutch. I know a hydraulic clutch or cable system would fix it, but can't bring myself to drill holes or make the car look non-original under the hood! Just my $.02.....
