Be careful Tom,another cause for that symptom is the steering box. After 35 + years most of the grease in unrestored steering boxes is the consistency of playdoe. If your box has never been rebuilt I am sure it needs it by now. Every car I have ever restored has upon examination needed to be rebuilt. But to get you for now you might try this. There is a slotted bolt with a lock nut that adjusts the play in the gears . Have someone wiggle the steering wheel back and forth(1/4 turn) and tighten the slotted bolt until it just drags then back it off half a turn and lock it down with the nut. I can almost guarantee the box needs to rebuilt even if your control valve was bad too. Shelby Parts and Restoration (Green Bay WI) has done a few foe me and I am extremely impressed with the results . He also does control valves. I highly recommend. If your doing a show car Jim can even detail it to look NOS. Bob G.
