There is much debate over how to store a car for a period of time. Most
argue if the car should be on the suspension or not. I have heard bad things
about having the car off the suspension but have yet to figure out why it is so
bad (other than for the shocks). one option is to just have it on a second set
    of cheap tires/rims.

    Bob,

Having the car raised in a fashion that the suspension is hanging for an
extended period of time can cause the suspension parts to bind and
weaken almost like your own body joints from over extending when hitting
a punching bag or swinging a tennis racket or bat. The results for the
suspension parts could be breaking of dust boots on items like ball
joints and flexing of solid rubber items like the lower control arm
inner bushing. The flex or bind of the solid rubber bushings creates a
"memory" that can alter the ride height (the distance from the ground to
a set point on the frame) or cause steering irregularities like
"pulling" or "drifting". I have found that resting the car on four 2 ton
(plus) jack stands padded with cotton hand towels placed under the rear
leaf spring plate and under the front lower control arm as close as you
can get to the ball joint with out hitting the tire is the best you can
hope for and still keep the tires on. One more advantage of resting the
car on the suspension is that the clearance of sway bar to balancer on
certain vehicles is decreased or eliminated all together when the
suspension is allowed to hang resulting in the balancer and sway bar
grinding into each other when you turn the motor over by hand or by
starting and running it. One other recommendation is to always run the
engine till it reaches operating temperature in the cooling systems and
exhaust to rid the motor and exhaust of condensation. I hope this helps.
