Pete, Central Division (CNDIV) SCCA started the car log book in the fall of 1971. Don Nixon, then area 4 Governor (now called Director) spearheaded the project and printed the books at Bodine Printing, his company, in Michigan City, Indiana. The project was so well received that the following year, around April 1972, car log books were implemented nationally. It was up to the regions to keep records on log books issued, serial numbers stamped into roll bars, etc. Some have good records, most do not. Documenting history before 1972 can usually be accomplished through owner chain verification and third party accounts along with period race results. It is becoming easier to track down early owners using internet resources, but unfortunately many of these folks are now found DEAD. Numbers stamped into the rollbar will indicate the region and the # as recorded in that region's inspection log. I don't have the regions' numbers, but I will look to forward you some names you may be able to contact to help further. As an added comment on the log books, several years ago and a very pristine 1971 F V showed up at the National with a 1971 CENDIV Log Book printed by Bodine Printing in Michigan City. The car had ONE race registered in the log book. Seems someone in the Cincinnati area had purchased the car new, had a log book issued, roll bar stamped, etc, and ran one race with the car. the owner decided that "sport car" racing was not for him and stored the car for 30 some years. The new owner was told that the log book was likely worth as much as the car to serious memorbilia collectors. Tom Gave you very accurate info. If the car was raced up until '82 it should have an SCCA logbook with the car somewhere. SCCA (scca.com) has some history from older events, but you will probably only be able to get information if you have the drivers names. If the car ever ran at VIR you might find something at this web site: http://virhistory.com/vir/vir.html#events If every track had someone so dedicated to the track's history we would have a great resource. I am sure the car would have raced at Road America and Brainerd. Those two tracks are where you might have the best chance of finding well documented history about past events. Bill Paul is the person I remember driving a Shelby in that area in the later 70's and early 80's. He wrote some articles in earlier issues of the Shelby American magazine about his racing exploits.
