Does anyone know how to tell if the upper side scoops on a 68GT500KR are original fiberglass. Also were there reinforced floor pans under the rear seat for the dual exhaust? Any help would be great. Thanks.
all original 68 fiberglass is smooth on all sides. It has a pinkish or white color. Yes, all dual exhaust cars have the doubler plates under the rear seats, including KRs, Are you looking at a car for sale?
Re: Shelbly Upper side scoop Thank you for your post. It's actually about my KR that I have had some conflicting information on. I was told that a way to tell if the upper side scoops were original is to feel inside the upper and lower section of the side scoop towards the front and it should be solid and smooth, which mine are. As for the dual exhaust floor pans I was told only on KR models as well as what you said, which makes sense since I have seen the reinforced pans on other restoration projects that were not KR's. I'm in the process of restoring mine now. Thanks for your info.
My car # 1648 68 fastback, 2 of the scoops have a witnes line on the edge, of an upper & one on the lower scoop. Was this an early K.R. scoop ? that they used when they ran out of the smooth scoops ? Car was built on 1-29-68 eighteen days behind schedule. --S.
Just to clarify # 1648 is not a GT500 KR. The so called witness lines have not been solved yet, I suspect AO Smith had several molds. They made scoops for over 8,000 cars counting the Cal Specials. Most likely the car got what ever was available. Your build date is the date the car was built at Ford and does not really influence the type of fiberglass used on the car, because it was most like finished much later.
