The move came after the Canadian Auto Workers union agreed to 2,500 early retirements to reduce costs at the plant to win the right to make the car. The plant was scheduled to close in 2008 but now will stay open, saving about 2,700 jobs. The company said it plans to revive the muscle car in 2008, with models reaching showrooms in 2009. GM stopped making Camaros in 2002. The auto maker hopes a new Camaro will attract younger buyers and appeal to its traditional customers who want to roar down the highway. Separately, GM spokeswoman Adria MacKenzie said GM will continue running three shifts at one of its car assembly lines in Oshawa, after the company decided earlier to remove a shift because of slower sales of certain models. GM said in November that it would remove the third shift in the second half of 2006 under a broader North American capacity-reduction plan.
