Hello to all of you, I'm wondering if anyone could help me solve a small dilemma. On a 68 Ford Mustang there is a centre bracket fastened to the hood lock support that helps stiffen and support the centre part of the stone deflector. My question is, was that centre support bracket left in place on the 68 Shelby's? I'm in the process of fitting the front fiberglass and don't have a recollection of ever taking this piece off for re-finishing. All other related components have been found and mounted except for this one.
blueracer99 On my KR, yes there is a center support bracket. It is about 17 inches long 1.5 inches at the top and 3.5 inches at the bottom. It can be seen looking through the grill in front of the car. Ranger Jerry
Thanks for the reply Jerry. I think what you may be refering to is what the Ford assembly manual refers to as the hood lock support. It mounts to the top of the rad support and extends down and is bolted to the front frame rail cross member and is located dead centre of the rad support opening. As you have said, you can see it through the upper and lower grill openings. The support bracket that I am refering to mounts to that piece and is located just below the bumper line and supports the centre of what might also be refered to as the fog lamp support. I have attached a link to a photo that might help clarify the location (hope it works, I haven't done this before) Getting back to my original question, was this support bracket removed for Shelby cars. Again, the reason I ask is I don't recall taking this piece off when disassembling the car and none of the holes on the top of this bracket appear to align with any holes found on the fog lamp support panel. The one shownin the photo is one that I borrowed. Thanks again for your reply.
The support you are referring to, the fog lamp support, is bolted to car with the 2 triangular brackets and has nothing that attaches to hood latch support. If you really want to be "correct" the 2 lower vertical hole that are in the latch support get U nuts clipped on them but nothing was attached in the case of Shelbys. Tim
Thanks for that interesting bit of detail TLEA. That would be something that I wouldn't have expected they would have left in place if the bracket was not installed. Would I be correct in saying that the u nuts would have also been unpainted with a phosphate finish? I learn something new every time I visit this site. Thanks guys
Yes they would be phosphate. Don't think of it as items they put on but more so of items they didn't take off. A lot easier to build one part for every car even if not used. Someone asked me the other day why they put copper hood bonding straps on Shelbys with fiberglass hoods. Same rule applies.
