A good friend offered to build me a web site for the Super Snake in order to host a better version of the 1967 video with Carroll driving it. Still under construction but go to www.supersnake.org and the video will open up. For a larger version, click on the line below the video that opens up.

This is a very cool ad. You can clearly see how fast the GT500
is going by the lift of the front end. Could have used a front spoiler
to hold it down, don't you agree.

Looks good Charley. I haven't seen that video in a while and that version certainly looks and sounds better. Do you have one of those Thunder Bolt posters?

Charley - What a cool piece of history. In the video they reported the car hit speeds of 140 mph...how is the car set up different then other 67 GT 500's? how is the rear end geared? I have a 427 SO/4 speed with 373's in my 67 GT 500 and to hit speeds close to a 100 mph i am way over 5500 rpms.

And we gotta find you the thunderbolt poster...I bet with all the resources on the forum someone has an idea of where to find one...thanks.

Thanks Vern ... John76...I assume they put highway gears in it for the tire test. At one point Carroll supposedly had it to 170. I think it has 410's in it now. The 427 is the aluminum headed Lemans engine with a single 4bbl. I believe it is rated at 520 hp. In the video they call it a specially prepared 650 hp car though, probably hype. Also had a bundle of Snakes set of headers, engine oil cooler, very deep oil pan, special grill with the area surrounding the outboards chromed, three stripes, louvers in the hood, three guages under the dash instead of two, can't remember what else. I should have more on the site later next week.

Charley - They must have had a highway gear in the rear to hit 170 mph b/c with 410's and a 4 speed you must be screaming to break a 100 mph. What is the third gauge under the dash? I know the car was built for Mel Burns Ford, was the engine prepared special for the Super Snake or was the engine one of the Cobra 427 lemans race engines? Do you know who built the engine? How big is the oil pan...how many quarts? What are the size/formula of the 3 stripes? Sorry for all the questions i just have a great interest in 427 powered GT 500s and not b/c i have one but b/c i think they are the perfect blend of the cobra and mustang.
    Thanks

Hi John. The third guage is a oil temp guage. I am sending detail pics of that stuff to my web site guy to add to the site. I'm still not sure it was built for Mel Burns Ford. Seems to me more like it was built for the tire test and then Mel Burns ran with it. I believe it was a Lemans 427. I had heard a story that Shelby was actually doing dyno work on the 427's for the GT40's and said to tell Ford that they blew one up and they used it in my car. I can't remember the oil pan size but I will figure it out by the next time I change it. The stripes are easy. Center blue stripe is 10" then 2" white on each side and finally 3" blue on each side for a total of 15".

Thanks for the pix. And just a few more questions...have you ever had the car apart? did they do anything special to the suspension or handling? Has the motor been apart or rebuilt? if so do you have any specs on the motor? Thanks for answering some questions and maybe i will get to see the Super Snake in person one of these days :)

The engine installed in the Supersnake for the tire test is the GT40 lightweight engine . It had the 10.5-1 compression pistons used on those engines for longivity. I believe the engine was modified to 13-1 compression for its later drag race life. Bob G.

    Charley,

Have you ever spoken with the two airline pilots that were the first owners?

No I don't think I have. I was warned a couple years ago that one of them had teamed up with someone else and were going to clone the car and try to pass it off as real at Barrett-Jackson. I let Steve Davis know at B-J and that was all I have heard.

Charley, very nice & super rare Shelby. I believe only two Super Snakes were built. I do know that one of them had been found some years ago about 15 miles from where I live. It could be the same car that you have now, I don't know. I haven't talked to the guy for a while now and do not know if he has still got it. He did have some other rare Ford performance cars also. It is very cool to see one again.
