I removed the speedometer drive gear from my aluminum T-10 beacause it was the wrong gear. The grooves on this wrong gear lean the opposite way from the grooves on the correct 4 speed gear now installed. This old drive gear moved the speedometer needle only when the car was going backwards. I think this incorrect gear is used in a transmission that has the speedo cable entering on the driver's side (not Mustang/Shelby) or a car that has a speedometer that indicates in reverse(right to left vs left to right). Any idea what the gear comes from? It is a metal gear pressed onto the tail shaft and is slightly smaller in overall diameter than the correct gear, Paul.

3 spd manuals and automatic trans cars have drive on driver's side and 4 spds on the passenger side and drive gears as you found are not interchangeable.

I should have been more specific on my initial post. The gear in question is an all metal, press on style. Not the plastic, snap ring clip in place style I am familiar with on top loaders, 3 speeds, and automatic transmissions. Did Borg Warner make a tranny that has the cable enter the housing like a 3speed/automatic or is there a Ford product out there with with reverse indicating speedometer? Paul.

When i bought my 64 Comet Cyclone it had a cast iron t-10 in it. My speed-0
did not work the cable went in to the tail shaft on the passenger side of the
housing. The pressed on gear was bad i could not find one for a while. I called a bunch of trans rebuilding shops and found a guy who had one .
