I am in the process of installing a Cobra T style oil pan and have ran into a problem that I hope someone here can help me with. I removed the standard metal stamped oil pan that was installed some years ago but when I try and install the new (repro) oil pan it hits the oil pick up. I measured and it appears to need about a 1/2" to clear it. Has anyone had this problem too? Any help is appreciated.
Look in the catalog that the new oil pan was in and see if there is also an oil pick-up. At additional charge of course.
Re: Cobra Oil Pan Installation Question I looked in the catalog and even called Branda and was told that the pan used the standard oil pick up, the salesman at Branda said he thought you had to bend the tube but was not sure and recommended that I call back on Monday and talk to tech support which I will do. I will see what the tech person has to say before trying to putting in on again.
Cobra Oil Pan Installation Question I talked to Branda today, he said that the oil pick up tube could have been changed when the engine was rebuilt and said I should find the correct one. The local Ford dealership can no longer get them and recommended an auto parts store. When I look in the shop manual and look at the one I currently have they look very similar, I took a picture and hope that someone can tell me if it looks correct for a K code engine.
It is hitting on the oil pickup tube filter (round part that has the screen in it) towards the back of the engine. The oil pan is basically square where the pickup tube goes, it has a lip that points to the front of the engine, it is hitting on that by about 1/2". Attached are some pictures, the first one shows the lip that it is hitting on (directly above the drain plug), the second picture shows the lip from the top. The last picture shows a side view of the oil pickup tube and the round part that has the screen in it, that is what hits the lip in the oil pan.
Okay, the oil pan is finally installed. After looking for and buying several oil pickup tubes (none of them worked) I finally just bent mine and the pan went on. If anyone wants the details let me know. Also the one piece Felpro gasket is the way to go but make sure you use the pins furnished in the gasket set. I am glad that this is over, should have the rest of the car back together tomorrow.
Thanks for the update! Hopefully the bending won't change the clearance needed from the floor of the pan, ie, might be too high now..
I was very careful to keep it at the same level so it should be okay. I should know pretty quick if I screwed up.
Yes, pan is up and installed. I only could run the car for a short time (had to go out of town) but no leaks. If one isn't concours conscience, definitely go with the allen head bolts. So much easier. Thanks for your help!
Good to hear that it is on. You are right about the bolts, the ones I used were phillip head (I know that they should only go on the 1965 but that is the ones that they had) and they went on well, the 4 hex bolts on each side of the crank front and back were tight to get in.
