Hey there...thought I would get your alls opinion here..I have some parts to repaint and dont know if I should have them painted originaly or powder coat them...dont know if powder coat will look like paint? I have a rear end/backing plates, export brace, monte carlo bar, sway bar, shock tower cap/brackets. Wanted to see as far as concourse judging will we lose points..as far as appearance goes will it look the same or will it totaly look incorrect? Also If I paint these parts what color of paint should I use..flat black..semi gloss or what?? Want these pieces to look factory.. Thanks!! JImmy
Powder coating is discernable from paint. It has a much thicker look (because it is). There are more choices now and matching the sheen of semi-gloss may be do-able, but it wouldn't have the right look, in my opinion. Josh
You don't mention where (what organization) you will be showing in concours but as mentioned you can tell on most parts that they are powder coated and you will loose much if not all of the little details like the markings and stampings "Also If I paint these parts what color of paint should I use..flat black..semi gloss or what?? Want these pieces to look factory.." Almost everything everything is done in semi-gloss black but each would take on a different amount of shine depending on how the paint was applied. The parts that were dipped (backing plates for example) would have a higher gloss while sprayed parts (rear end housing and engine pulleys) - generally flatter. Since almost all of these parts were painted at different locations and/or different times we would expect differences because of that also
About 15 years ago, a friend of mine went crazy with powder coating. He had the frame of his 1929 Ford Model A Roadster pick-up done in black. The powder coating was so thick, he had to grind spots away to get certian parts fit. I had the wheels done on my '34 and have been very happy.
I'm a powder coat junkie;did the proper concours stuff 8-10years ago now my 69 500 is being done to drive;backing plates control arms sway bar, shock mounts,my mind reels!! Slicker than oil coatings for windage trays and oil pans, I have used it on rear axle housings for years Steele
