    HI ALL -- GENERAL QUESTION
My wife was listening to me go on and on about how rare these cars are..and i was showing her the 68 kr fastback that carol "borrowed" at one point -- it's currently on e-bay -- with a buy it now of 500k -- so out of the I don't know 11 thousand shelbys made from 65-70 what percentage are dead and buried and never to return again? any educated guesses? -- my guess was 20% -- but i could be way off -- you registry scholars will really have good guesses -- thanks for your input -- john

I don't know but I would guess its more like 30-40%. No real way of telling as the registry only records known cars. Just because someone doesn't list it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. My 68 wasn't in the registry until 2004 even though I've documented all but 10 years of its history and I even know what state it was in for those 10 years!

Great question. I don't think that anyone knows for....

an absolute, scientific fact but I've always "heard" about 70% are still in existence. By existence I mean either rolling today or rusting today waiting to roll tomorrow.

I believe that 25% gone is a Safe estimate. Shelby Mustangs and COBRA cars have been considered as Special from Day 1. on a few occasions they fall from the hands of Collectors and people of knowledge into the hands of those who could care less what it is. They usually deteriorate in a Back yard or garage until that person Dies or is removed and sent to a Mental ward and the property needs clearing. that is where Luck chooses the cars next destination! sme people get them just before the Tow Truck arrives. or the other scenario is that at some point they end up at a Junkyard (Like all cars eventually do) and scavengers pick them clean or in some cases resurrect the tired Wrecked Car. So to figure out how many are gone is a Tough call. I have found a few in my travels that were never registered with SAAC. and there are more out there. it just depends on when FATE decides if it will be your Lucky Day or someone elses!

Regarding the '65 Shelby, a surprisingly high percentage have survived.

The best estimate from SAAC is that 85% of the '65s remain today--including a few that have been rebodied (but started out with an original car)--which means about 475 or so of the 562 '65s produced are still around.

    Regards, Neil.

I don't have a current SAAC registry, so how many 1965 and 1966 Shelby's are still unaccounted for? That would be the first step in determining how many are left. The last time I looked, there were quite a few R-Models that were listed as destroyed.
