What thermostat housing for a 67 500?

The correct 67 GT500 housing carries a C7 engineering number. It is designed for the small thermostat. It does not have a threaded boss for a vacuam tree like the 68 housing. It does share the same dimple on the back of the elbow like the 68 unit . That is how you can tell the correct 67 GT500 thermostat from the earlier C5 large thermostat unit that is so often mistakenly used. The 67 thermostat was only used in 1967 which is why it is so hard to find.

Mr Gasket makes a high flow thermostat that would recomend. Check jegs or summit . I have had very good luck with the 160 degree unit.I hope this helps.

I am not sure who the OEM MFG was to Ford but it was nothing special and probably the same design as your auto part store varity . The small thermostat was used from 1967 on up in big block, small block, six cyl etc. . I just like the Mr Gasket one which is sold under other names as well because I experienced a noticable better cooling with the high flow MR G unit over the OEM unit. I always use the 160 degree high flow unit for the best cooling on the over heating prone big blocks. Bob

 

Thanks again- one last question. Leave it aluminum or paint blue? I've seen both but surely MCAA says something on it. I have an early car (Dec66). Most I've seen are painted but I've seen a couple "non restored originals" bare. Whats the concensus?
